Long format green-grey infinitum 6013 enhances exclusive look of villa

Dramatic transformation of detached ‘70s house in Voorschoten, the Netherlands

In a park-like setting in Voorschoten, the Netherlands, stood a typical ’70s house surrounded by a beautiful garden with large trees, a number of outbuildings and a swimming pool. The remarkable fact is that this house was not designed with the current garden but on a small plot. It was not until later that the site surrounding the house was expanded to create the green plot on which it currently stands.

TRANSFORMATION

On the instruction of the new residents, JADE architecten exploited the potential of the plot by carrying out a major transformation. The renovation works involved extending the villa and orienting the house for optimal views of the garden and natural daylight. The floor plans for both the ground floor and the first floor were rearranged and a void was created, connecting the floors to each other and also to the outside.

COMFORT AND ENERGY STANDARDS

The structure of the house was also upgraded to bring it back into line with current and future comfort and energy standards. This was achieved by breaking through the existing façade, installing new insulation and reinstating the brickwork using the unique Hand-Made oblong green-grey facing brick infinitum 6013.

Window frames were replaced and systems updated, including a heat pump, solar panels and collectors for the house and also for the outbuildings and the heating system for the swimming pool. The brickwork and the aluminium window frames have created a new colour scheme for the façades that will be complemented by the colours of the plants in the garden as they change with the seasons.

STARTING POINT FOR THE DESIGN

The starting point for the design was the aim to make the garden tangible inside the house in order to optimise the interaction between the interior and exterior. The residents and the architect also wanted to make the house and outbuildings sustainable and create a clear architectural design in terms of layout, materials and style.

LONG FORMAT FACING BRICK INFINITUM 6013

The whole villa is surrounded by greenery and consists in turn of three interconnected volumes, each of a different size and individually oriented within the garden. The legibility of this form and cautiousness regarding the spot where it stands have been emphasised by cladding the house in a single material: the green-grey facing brick infinitum 6013.

Large walls of glass connect life outside with life inside the house and in the summer, the two literally become one as the large doors slide right back.
JADE architecten chose to transform the villa by using the green-grey facing brick infinitum 6013: “The design and material research resulted in the choice of a brick that embeds the house in its natural green surroundings which change with the weather and the seasons rather than one that would create contrasting façades. In addition, the Hand-Made character of the facing brick ties in with the natural character while the exclusivity of the long format fits the look of a villa.”
