Dehullu Architecten scores with rustic brick in modern design

34 classy social housing units with a contemporary look

Dehullu Architecten won the competition to build 34 social housing units in the Losschaert zone in Zwevegem. This pilot project for water management fits in with the vision of the intercommunal Leiedal. In spite of the clay subsoil, maximum use has been made of the infiltration, recovery and buffering of rainwater. The various basins, canals and wadis create added scenic value and give the site structure.

The 34 housing units follow the suggestion of the SIP and have been built on plots 6 m wide. Here, the recessed design of the façades which is normally used for rear façades has been used at the front as a quality feature, while the carports are directly integrated in the volume. All the housing units have ‘front-to-back rooms’ and a private garden, including the apartments.

“When choosing the brick, we wanted to find a rustic brick to contrast with the rather sleek architecture. The ‘Oud Brugghe’ was laid using thin bed mortar. So the look of the brick creates a homeliness within the large scale of the project”, says Bert Dehullu (architect).

‘Eileen Gray’ by Rietveld Projects is timeless minimalism in its most robust form

To call Rietveld Projects a project developer would actually be doing the company from Koksijde an injustice.
