back garden with a subtle mix of traditional materials

Pearlgrey clay paver in a design of Victoria Wade Landscapes of Penarth, Cardiff

The brief given to Victoria Wade Landscapes of Penarth, Cardiff was to create an elegant 'outdoor living room' for her client.

This small back garden in Pontcanna, Cardiff was designed to create a seamless transition between inside and out, and provide an extension of the client’s living space.

A subtle mix of traditional materials and cottage garden planting was married with a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic which mirrored the mix of old and new found in the client’s Victorian terrace house with modern extension.

Vande Moortel's Ancienne Belgique Pearl Grey natural clay pavers were used for both the hard surfaces and the walls of the raised beds and built in seating area, which were topped with polished grey sandstone.

As managers of family business Tuinen Hoornaert, the pair designed the outside space with two aims in mind: to create both a peaceful oasis for the family and also an inspiring show garden for customers. The result: a garden that stimulates the senses and spontaneously inspires ideas while at the same time looking completely natural and simple.
