Ancienne Belgique Lava heightens the rural feel

Landscaped garden with clay pavers completes renovated square farmhouse

Landscape and garden architect Jonas D’hoore from Creatief in groen created this landscaped garden around a renovated square farmhouse in Poperinge. The design integrates the farmhouse into the surrounding landscape of fields in the Westhoek.

The idea was to create a welcoming, stylish, large external space where the views of the surrounding landscape are part of the garden experience.

Sustainable, high-quality materials were chosen for the contemporary but timeless design. The distinctive Ancienne Belgique Lava clay pavers form an extension of the rural farmhouse.

The brown and black shades of the Lava complement the building materials of the farmhouse. The blue hardstone and cobbles are further rustic touches. The distinctive pavers are laid in stretcher bond with fine cement joints, containing brown quartz sand.

Emphasising the different levels represented a creative challenge for Jonas D’hoore.  There is a marked difference in height, both inside the house and in the external space on the plot.

This was made a feature of the design of the external space and emphasised in keeping with the character of the landscape. An elegant raised lawn, majestic, wide steps of clay pavers, elegant banks and natural slopes reflect this.

Local plants were chosen: solitary multi-trunk and high-growing trees, evergreen, hawthorn and beech hedges, ornamental grasses and flower beds connecting home, living and the environment.

The aim of this careful selection was to create a low-maintenance green space.

The design of the inner courtyard is in sharp contrast to the carefree, playful character of the back garden. Patterns of lawns, clay-paver and cobbled paths and hedges emphasise the elegant lines of the design.

This shows that the Lava clay pavers fit in perfectly with a variety of designs.
“The theme running through the whole design is the creation of atmosphere and experience”, says Jonas D’hoore

Landscape and garden designer Stijn De Baets was given the challenge of creating a garden with a holiday feel and peaceful atmosphere. "The feel is the prime concern while paying due attention to architectural guidelines and proportions. It is mainly a question of interpreting what a space requires in order to allow it to realise its maximum potential", explains Stijn.
